Let’s get to know Matt:
How did you get into healthcare PR?
I actually spent most of my college years thinking I would work in the arts nonprofit space, since I was working toward a degree in music in addition to my public relations degree. My last semester I had an internship at a PR firm and decided that was where I wanted to go with my career. When I was looking for my first job, I was referred to a firm that had a lot of clients in healthcare, and specifically in health tech. I knew nothing about it, but liked the idea of working with clients who created innovative technologies to make a real difference in people’s lives. Five years later, I’ve learned a ton about the ins and outs of healthcare, and how companies are developing novel technologies to tackle some of the industry’s biggest challenges.
What healthcare trends are you most excited about and why?
Since my career has started, there’s been growing recognition about the impact that social factors have on a person’s health. More and more, healthcare providers are realizing that things beyond blood pressure or heart rate can dictate someone’s well-being – such as access to nutritious food, transportation, or a family caregiver. Now, there are more solutions that account for these social determinants of health. This wholistic view is critical to improving healthcare, especially for our most vulnerable people, and I’m excited to see where it leads.
What do you think is the most important thing that people should know about the future of healthcare?
Consumers are going to be at the center of a lot of what’s to come in healthcare. We’re at the beginning of transitioning a healthcare system that’s historically been difficult for consumers to understand and engage with, to one that’s more user-friendly for patients. With this, we are all going to have more control over what care we get when, and from who, which is good news for all involved.
What is your go-to source for health tech news and trends?
With so much going on in healthcare, there are a lot of great resources! Fierce’s health tech coverage is a big one for me, and I also make sure to keep up with sites like MedCity News, as well as healthcare focused newsletters from outlets like Politico and Axios. There’s also great stuff happening on Substack and podcasts! The Tradeoffs podcast is a personal favorite.
